Neurodiversity is Normal
Most people want to feel normal and fit in with the majority. The problem with this is that there is no single definition of normal. The human brain is such a complex organ that there are a multitude of differences between them. Normal for one person is abnormal for another. Neurodivergence is the term used for people who’s brains function differently than the perceived majority. This can be expressed through diagnoses such as autism, dyslexia, ADHD, sensory processing problems, and a multitude of others.

The world would be boring if we were all the same
I have felt stupid and different most of my life. When I was failing 4th grade, my school tested me for learning disabilities. I was diagnosed with dyslexia and dysgraphia. All the sudden I was taken out of my normal language arts class and put in a special education annex classroom. Kids called it the retard building. I developed a hatred of school that lasted for years. It is still difficult for me to believe I’m not less intelligent than everyone else.

Find people as abnormal as you
Neurodivergence can make life more challenging for people, but it is not an illness to be cured. It is a fact of the human condition that should be understood and embraced. I think my ability to be a therapist without getting a lot of emotional fatigue is due to my brain working differently than most. It is my superpower. I’ve seen ADHD improve creative expression, conversation skills, and work efficiency through hyperfocusing. People with autism tend to be more honest and have a strong moral code.
Embrace the weird, awkward person you are
Rebel against normality
If you identify as neurodivergent, please love and be kind to yourself. Learn how to work with, and not against, your brain. If you are not neurodivergent, please do not place judgments on people born differently than you. Learning and listening feels a lot better than hating and harming.
